MISSION
Accra Literacy is a space for storytelling and literacy advancement for underserved groups.
We have a dual mission. On one hand, we provide programs and learning resources for children and young people within underserved communities both in NYC and in Ghana to advance literacy; and on the other, we serve as a space for emerging writers to convene and share their unique stories with the public.
VALUES
Equity & Access
Accra Literacy was born out of the need to create space for storytelling and literacy advancement for people within underserved groups. We are keen on providing necessities that will aid in serving as a gateway to help our people enter spaces they may ordinarily not be able to access
Collaboration
We deem it necessary to collaborate and co-create with our beneficiaries and partner organizations to address their specific needs
Adaptability
We understand that change is part of life and so rather than shying away from it and risking being stagnant, we embrace the unpredictability of life and channel it to help us adapt with the times as needed
Immersion
To be able to truly speak to the needs of the groups we serve, we are committed to learning directly from and with them
Questioning
We value the art of questioning as we are invested in nurturing curiosity among all stakeholders. We understand that we cannot know if we do not investigate
Learning & Growth
We are receptive to receiving feedback as a way to learn from our shortcomings because as humans doing this work, we are susceptible to being fallible. We don’t know it all, but we are open to learning and growing
Compassion
We understand that the world is a complex place sometimes filled with unrest and tension. Therefore, we take it a step further to acknowledge nuanced emotions of those we work with and try to help the best way we can
To create a safe space for storytelling, story-sharing, and literacy advancement for underserved communities.
